New Emergency Homeless Shelter
We regularly take food to homeless camps in the Akron area, and we have a long-term plan to provide housing for the friends we serve. However, as we have mentioned before, the crisis is urgent.
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, there are at least 30 homeless camps with hundreds of people in need of warm housing during the winter months. That’s why The Peter Maurin Center is going to be overseeing an emergency homeless facility to house our friends in these cold months.
The Journal interviewed our director, Georgann Mirgliotta about the issues facing our homeless friends. One thing she mentioned is that sometimes it is difficult to get people to go to the shelter for the night. Many fear that their stuff will be stolen while they are away.
Notably, Georgann has not come across any homeless friends who have had COVID-19. While can’t say that the virus has not affected the homeless population, our friends have been able to avoid it.
So, we are calling on our supporters to pray specifically for a few needs:
Pray that the virus would not spread in emergency shelters.
Pray that our homeless friends would take the opportunity to sleep safely in a warm shelter.
Pray that our friends would not lose their stuff to theft or the elements while they are in the shelters.
Pray for long-term homeless solutions.
Thank you for your support and prayers!
