Opportunity Village Tiny Homes
In the last two posts we featured tiny home villages that provide permanent housing for formerly homeless friends. Think of the tiny house village as the long-term, permanent solution we have envisioned.
However, there is value in transitional housing to move our friends from homelessness to permanent housing. Square One Villages (featured in our last post) began with a transitional housing facility. These transitional spaces were very small, smaller than a tiny house. They are designed for each person to have a secure, personal space in which to sleep and store property. These tiny spaces are combined with common areas that residents can use to build community.
Have a look at the Opportunity Village page on the Eugene, OR website as well as the page about Opportunity Village on the Square One website.
One of the notable takeaways for the program is that the community is self-governed. The community is gated, residents have ownership of their individual homes, and they self-govern through a counsel and vetting committee. When the community first started, there was some concern of increased crime. However, the police have reported that the presence of the village has not negatively influenced the crime rate. In fact, it appears their presence has contributed to an increase in community safety.
